Background & Job Description

The IMF’s Fund Internship Program (FIP) for Economists is a premier 10–12 week paid internship, typically running between June and September 2026. This program is designed for exceptional PhD students to collaborate with leading experts in international finance and policy. Selected interns will be based at the IMF headquarters in Washington D.C., contributing directly to the Fund’s mission of securing financial stability and promoting sustainable global growth. Tasks

Interns will be assigned an experienced IMF economist as a mentor. Your primary duties will include:

  • Conducting high-level economic research and detailed analysis on a topic chosen by the IMF.
  • Preparing and presenting a final research paper on your assigned topic.
  • The possibility of having your research paper published internally by the IMF.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Must be a current PhD student in macroeconomics or a closely related field (e.g., finance, public finance, econometrics).
  • Must be within one to two years of completing your PhD program.
  • Must be in active student status (returning to university) after the internship.

Experience

  • Applicants must possess an excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and computer skills are essential.
  • Must be below the age of 32 at the commencement of the internship in June 2026 (a single exception is made for time spent in mandatory military service).

Additional Information

This is a full-time, paid internship. Successful candidates receive a competitive salary, round-trip economy-class airfare from their university to Washington D.C., and limited medical insurance coverage. Please note that while the IMF facilitates the necessary G4 visa paperwork for non-U.S. citizens/permanent residents, housing and housing assistance are not provided—interns are responsible for securing their own accommodation in D.C. Previous FIP interns are not eligible to re-apply.
