The Call for Applications: SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 – Innovating for Safe Spaces with USD 5,000–10,000 Seed Grants invites young African innovators aged 18–35 to develop digital and community-based solutions addressing gender-based violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and online harm.

Background & Programme Description

The SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 is a youth social innovation challenge led by UNFPA regional offices with partners including the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme, the African Union, UNDP, UNICEF and UN Women.

The initiative supports youth-led innovations that promote digital rights, safety and protection for women, girls and marginalised communities.

Challenge Themes

Applicants can submit solutions under one of three themes:

  • Safe Physical and Community Spaces: Preventing harmful practices, child marriage, female genital mutilation and gender-based violence.
  • Safe Informational Spaces: Improving access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information.
  • Safe Digital Spaces: Addressing online harassment, technology-facilitated violence, censorship and anti-rights disinformation.

Proposed solutions may include mobile reporting systems, educational platforms, digital safety tools and privacy-preserving technologies.

Eligibility Requirements

The call targets young African innovators aged 18–35, including social entrepreneurs, digital rights advocates and youth-led teams developing practical solutions.

Projects should demonstrate originality, feasibility, inclusion, youth leadership, scalability and strong attention to safety, privacy and ethical technology.

Grants and Benefits

Four winners will receive seed grants ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 each. Shortlisted finalists will also receive virtual mentorship and pitch coaching before presenting at the YouthConnekt Africa Summit in November 2026.

Additional benefits include exposure to investors, development partners and continental media platforms.

Deadline: 18 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central Africa Time (CAT).

Applications must be submitted online through the official application portal linked on the programme announcement.

Applicants should prepare team details, select one challenge theme, provide a problem statement of up to 200 words, submit an innovation description of up to 700 words, and outline a 12-month implementation plan. A digital safety and inclusion statement is also required.
