As part of its Natural Sciences Sector, ICTP is inviting applications for a part-time Associate Research Officer at the P-1 grade level. The role supports the Centre’s commitment to mathematical research and is particularly centered on Dynamical Systems. Working under the supervision of the Head of Section and in close collaboration with research scientists and the Group Lead for Dynamical Systems, the selected candidate will contribute to high-impact scientific research, training, and mentoring.

The position is open to both internal and external candidates and offers a starting annual salary of approximately USD 51,125 (pro-rated for part-time work). The duration of the initial contract is one year, with the potential for extension based on performance and funding.

Tasks

The Associate Research Officer will be expected to perform the following core responsibilities:

  • Research Activities: Conduct front-line research in Theoretical Mathematics with a strong focus on Topological Dynamical Systems, Continuum Theory, and Ergodic Theory.
  • Program Coordination and Training: Organize and deliver seminars, workshops, and topical meetings related to their field of expertise.
  • Scientific Mentorship: Actively engage with visiting researchers and scientists from developing countries, providing guidance and mentorship to nurture their research capabilities.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Maintain close interactions with other ICTP scientific sections and laboratories. Engage with external research institutions to promote knowledge exchange and global collaboration.
  • Additional Duties: Support the overall goals of the research group and the section by undertaking any other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A PhD or doctoral degree in Mathematics, with specialization in Topological Dynamical Systems or related fields such as Continuum Theory or Ergodic Theory.

Experience

  • A minimum of 1 to 2 years of relevant research experience in theoretical mathematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research or contribute significantly under moderate supervision.
  • Experience in organizing academic events such as seminars and research workshops.
  • Previous involvement in mentoring or collaborating with visiting researchers, particularly from developing countries, is highly desirable.

Benefits and Compensation
