About the Risk Finance & Insurance Team
The Risk Finance & Insurance team operates within the Economy, Social Affairs, and Digitalization department, focusing on improving climate and disaster risk financing solutions in developing and emerging economies. The team actively advises the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and contributes to global efforts addressing financial protection against climate-induced disasters. Their work supports international frameworks such as:
- The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs)
- The Paris Agreement
- The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
- The G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion
Internship Overview
As an intern, you will contribute to the advisory work for BMZ’s Climate Policy department (BMZ-Referat 420), conduct research, and support the team in developing policy recommendations on climate and disaster risk financing. You will also assist with knowledge management, external communications, and international event preparations.
Tasks
As an intern, your key responsibilities will include:
1. Supporting Advisory Work for BMZ
- Assisting in drafting reports, briefing notes, and research papers on climate and disaster risk financing.
- Analyzing the effectiveness of risk finance mechanisms, including the Global Shield against Climate Risks.
- Evaluating project proposals and contributing to policy development on climate insurance and financial resilience.
2. Conducting Research & Conceptual Work
- Performing in-depth research on climate risk financing for nature-based solutions (NbS) and other emerging trends.
- Gathering data on insurance models, risk financing mechanisms, and disaster response strategies.
- Contributing to the development of new financing concepts to protect vulnerable communities from climate shocks.
3. Business Development & Strategy Support
- Assisting in identifying new opportunities for business development within climate risk financing.
- Collaborating with stakeholders to enhance the impact of financial risk management programs.
4. Knowledge Management & Communication
- Supporting the creation of fact sheets, policy briefs, and reports on climate risk financing.
- Preparing presentations and concept notes for global climate and finance conferences.
- Contributing to external communication efforts through platforms like adaptationcommunity.net.
5. Event & Meeting Support
- Assisting in organizing internal team meetings, workshops, and international events.
- Preparing event materials, documentation, and knowledge-sharing content.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
To be eligible for this internship, you should:
- Be in the final stage of a bachelor’s degree or preferably enrolled in a master’s program in economics, social sciences, political science, mathematics, geography, finance, or related fields.
- Have a strong academic background in topics related to climate adaptation, disaster risk management, financial inclusion, or sustainable development.
Experience
While prior professional experience is not mandatory, the following qualifications will be highly valued:
- Previous exposure to climate risk financing, disaster risk management, insurance models, or financial risk assessment.
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear reports.
- Experience in business development, strategy consulting, or policy analysis is a plus.
- Familiarity with international climate policy frameworks (e.g., Paris Agreement, SDGs, Sendai Framework) is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a knack for writing policy papers, reports, or briefing notes.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
