Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a talented and passionate Press Officer to join its Communications Department in Sydney. This role offers an incredible opportunity to contribute to HRW’s global mission of promoting and protecting human rights through strategic media outreach and editorial excellence.
About the Role
The Press Officer will be HRW’s primary liaison with media professionals across Oceania and will work to expand the organization’s visibility and reach in the Australian media landscape. Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager based in Washington DC, this role will support the daily operations of the HRW Press Team by editing content, engaging with journalists, coordinating media campaigns, and overseeing communications across the Asia/Pacific time zone.
This position is a 13-month full-time contract to cover parental leave, with an anticipated start date in mid-May 2025. Occasional night and weekend work and travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement communications strategies in collaboration with HRW’s Senior Communications Manager and Director.
- Build and maintain relationships with Australian and Oceania media outlets.
- Pitch HRW’s research to targeted media contacts.
- Copy edit, format, and distribute press materials.
- Coordinate the production and dissemination of HRW publications and reports.
- Support press events and virtual media briefings across Asia-Pacific.
- Manage editorial flow and publishing schedules.
- Collaborate with regional and global Press Officers to ensure cohesive media outreach.
- Respond to journalist inquiries and connect media with relevant HRW experts.
- Maintain contact databases and press archives.
- Guide interns and co-supervise the West Coast Associate.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of media or communications experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Australian and international media landscapes.
Key Skills:
- Familiarity with AP Stylebook.
- Proven ability to craft clear and compelling pitches.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Experience with PR distribution tools like Cision, Meltwater, or Muck Rack.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative mindset.
Eligibility:
- Must have valid Australian work authorization.
