The Deputy Chief Economist and Director, Private Markets is a GI-grade international recruitment position with a four-year term. The role is designed to significantly strengthen the World Bank Group’s ability to support private sector development, crowd in private capital, and manage macroeconomic, market, and political risks in emerging and developing economies.

In this role, the selected candidate will act as a senior economic advisor to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). The position bridges DEC’s global research capacity with the operational needs of IFC and MIGA, ensuring that economic analysis directly informs private investment strategies, guarantees, and risk mitigation efforts.

Tasks

The Deputy Chief Economist and Director, Private Markets will lead and oversee a wide-ranging portfolio of responsibilities, including:

  • Setting and executing a joint IFC–MIGA economics research agenda within DEC, focused on private investment, guarantees, and risk mitigation
  • Advising IFC and MIGA senior management on macroeconomic, market, and policy issues affecting investment pipelines, portfolios, and risk appetite
  • Providing quality assurance on major research publications relevant to private sector development
  • Aligning DEC’s global research, indicators, and development datasets with IFC and MIGA operational priorities
  • Mobilizing DEC’s analytical networks and advisory capacity to support private markets work
  • Commissioning and curating flagship research and analytics related to private investment and guarantees, including partnerships with universities, think tanks, and IFIs
  • Promoting the creation and use of firm-level and transaction-level datasets, market surveys, and real-time indicators
  • Leading dissemination of research through policy briefs, reports, working papers, seminars, and digital platforms
  • Ensuring research outputs are rigorous, timely, accessible, and relevant to investors, policymakers, and clients
  • Leading, mentoring, and managing the Private Markets Department, fostering innovation, collaboration, and analytical excellence
  • Managing budgets, work programs, timelines, and staff resources effectively
  • Ensuring data privacy, access protocols, and confidentiality requirements are strictly followed
  • Coordinating clearance of sensitive research with IFC and MIGA Managing Directors where required

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • PhD in Economics is required
  • Strong academic background with a publication record in development economics, finance, private sector development, or related fields

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years of progressively senior professional experience applying economics to private investment, financial markets, guarantees, or policy work
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior decision-makers in complex institutional environments
  • Proven ability to translate economic research into operationally actionable insights
  • Strong track record in empirical research, dataset development, and market monitoring
  • Experience working across matrixed organizations and with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for management, investors, policymakers, and public audiences
  • Demonstrated leadership in team management, mentoring, and organizational strategy
  • Strong professional networks across academia, international financial institutions, and the World Bank Group
  • High standards of integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to World Bank Group values
