Bermuda College has added two critical incident training courses to its professional and career education programme, giving professionals and volunteers practical training to support people affected by traumatic and high-stress events.
The courses are part of the college’s fall 2026 schedule and are delivered through the Athora Division of Professional & Career Education (APACE). The training is designed for people working in areas including education, emergency services, public safety, law enforcement, disaster response, healthcare, mental health, employee assistance, spiritual care, peer support and business.
New Crisis Training Courses at Bermuda College
The two courses are based on training from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and will be led by Dr Mira Ingemann, a certified ICISF instructor.
The training combines practical learning with group exercises and covers when crisis interventions should be used, how they should be delivered and the considerations involved in effective crisis response.
Assisting Individuals in Crisis
Assisting Individuals in Crisis is a two-day intensive course focused on providing immediate psychological support following a crisis.
The training is described as “emotional first aid” rather than psychotherapy. Participants will explore psychological first aid, common crisis reactions and the SAFER-R model for individual crisis intervention.
The course is intended to help participants develop the knowledge and confidence needed to provide appropriate support following high-stress events.
Group Crisis Intervention
The second course, Group Crisis Intervention, introduces participants to the fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM).
The course covers several approaches to group crisis intervention and also addresses follow-up services and referrals when additional support is required.
Together, the courses are intended to strengthen the ability of professionals and volunteers to respond appropriately when individuals or groups experience traumatic events.
Who Can Take the Crisis Training?
The courses are aimed at professionals and volunteers whose work may involve supporting people following emergencies, traumatic incidents or other high-stress situations.
Potential participants include people working in:
- Education
- Emergency services
- Public safety
- Law enforcement
- Disaster response
- Healthcare
- Mental health
- Employee assistance
- Spiritual care
- Peer support
- Business
The training may also be relevant to people involved in community response and organizations that need staff prepared to support individuals following critical incidents.
Dr Mira Ingemann to Lead the Training
The courses will be led by Dr Mira Ingemann, a Registered Clinical Psychologist and ICISF-certified instructor.
According to Bermuda College, Dr Ingemann has more than 30 years of experience spanning higher education, occupational health and public safety.
She developed the Bermuda Police Service’s Critical Incident Stress Management programme and has provided crisis-intervention support and training in Bermuda and internationally.
As founder of Moksha Therapeutics, she currently provides trauma-informed clinical services and CISM training across public-safety, healthcare, military and community settings.
Dr Ingemann said preparation can help people respond more calmly and confidently when devastating events occur, including personal tragedies, road fatalities, workplace crises, large-scale emergencies and natural disasters.
She also said the training aims to make standardized crisis-intervention education more accessible while helping people who already have CISM training develop their skills and progress toward specialist certification.
