The University of Sheffield AHRC PhD Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded PhD + £21,805 Stipend — International Students Can Apply offers four full PhD studentships each year, including up to one place for an outstanding international candidate.
Background & Scholarship Description
The University of Sheffield has received an AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA) supporting postgraduate researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
For the 2027/28 entry, the scheme will support four full PhD studentships per year. The studentships are associated with the AHRC North/Northwest Hub, alongside nine other regional universities.
The scheme is open to new PhD applicants and does not accept candidates who are already enrolled in a PhD.
Scholarship Benefits
The 3.5-year studentships provide:
- A maintenance stipend at the UKRI rate, currently £21,805 for the 2026/27 academic year.
- Payment of tuition fees at either the Home or International rate, as applicable.
- Participation in the DLA North/North West Hub cohort, including training and other cohort activities.
Up to one of the four studentships may be allocated to an outstanding international candidate, meaning international applicants can apply but face particularly strong competition.
Eligible Study Areas
The studentships are available within Sheffield’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which includes:
- School of English
- School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities
- School of Languages, Arts and Societies
- School of Law
The faculty also has more than 200 PhD researchers and numerous research centres supporting interdisciplinary research.
How to Apply
The application has two parts.
First, applicants must submit a PhD study application through the University of Sheffield’s online application portal.
The deadline for the study application is Monday, December 14, 2026.
After receiving a study application number, applicants must submit a separate funding application using the designated funding form.
The funding application deadline is 5 PM GMT on Friday, February 19, 2027.
Applicants should prepare their funding responses in advance because the funding form must be completed in one sitting.
Final selections are expected to be confirmed in March 2027, with applicants expected to receive their final outcome by the end of March.
