Regional Thematic Specialist (Humanitarian Response and Recovery) (P) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is seeking an experienced humanitarian professional to provide regional leadership, technical guidance and programme oversight from Nairobi, Kenya.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a related organization of the United Nations, is inviting applications for the position of Regional Thematic Specialist (Humanitarian Response and Recovery) in Nairobi, Kenya.

This internationally recruited, P-4 staff position supports humanitarian response and recovery programmes across the region. The successful candidate will provide strategic advice, technical expertise and quality oversight to country offices, helping strengthen emergency preparedness, protection, displacement solutions and recovery programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the regional Humanitarian Response and Recovery Unit.
  • Provide technical guidance and capacity-building support to country offices and partners.
  • Develop strategic partnerships and support resource mobilisation.
  • Review project proposals, reports and programme quality.
  • Support monitoring, evaluation and risk management.
  • Promote evidence-based planning, policy development and research.
  • Strengthen regional coordination, knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • Mainstream protection-centred approaches, accountability to affected populations and cash-based interventions.
  • Represent IOM in relevant regional humanitarian discussions and partnerships.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:

  • A master’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, Social Science or a related field, with at least seven years of relevant professional experience; or
  • A university degree in the above fields, with at least nine years of relevant professional experience.

Candidates should also have:

  • Demonstrated experience in humanitarian response and recovery.
  • At least five years of experience managing humanitarian response and recovery projects in non-OECD countries.
  • Experience in project development, capacity building, advocacy and resource mobilisation.
  • Experience working with international organisations, the United Nations, governments or NGOs.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, communication and team management skills.

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
