Background & Job Description

ClimateWorks Foundation, a global leader in strategic climate philanthropy, is on a mission to end the climate crisis by amplifying the power of collective giving. Since its inception in 2008, the foundation has awarded over $1.8 billion in grants to more than 850 organizations worldwide. Their work spans continents, providing critical infrastructure, global partnerships, and catalytic insights to scale climate solutions.

The foundation is now inviting applications for a full-time Program Associate – Adaptation and Resilience, a homebased position that plays a pivotal role within the Adaptation and Resilience program. This program works at the nexus of climate change, equity, and systemic transformation by convening global funders, driving strategic grantmaking, and catalyzing innovative climate adaptation efforts—especially in communities most vulnerable to climate shocks.

As part of a small, mission-driven, and collaborative team, the Program Associate will support the development and implementation of global strategies and manage relationships with philanthropic partners through the Adaptation and Resilience Collaborative for Funders (ARC). This role is ideally suited for a motivated, detail-oriented, and self-starting professional with a strong passion for climate justice, community-based solutions, and global philanthropy.

Although the role is homebased, it requires occasional travel and cross-time-zone collaboration. The foundation has its headquarters in the San Francisco Financial District but welcomes candidates from across the U.S., with salary differentials based on geographic location.

Tasks

The Program Associate will serve as a backbone for the strategic, operational, and analytical elements of the Adaptation and Resilience program. Key responsibilities include:

  • Grant and Budget Oversight: Manage tracking of program grants and ensure timely completion of grant cycles. Monitor and report on budgeting processes, financial disbursements, and impact metrics.

  • Research and Strategic Support: Assist in researching emerging adaptation trends and synthesizing findings to inform long-term strategy across key issue areas, especially in relation to communities in the Global South.

  • Grantee Identification and Support: Help identify high-impact potential grantees. Contribute to proposal evaluation, relationship building, and identifying fundable initiatives that align with the foundation’s strategic vision.

  • Event and Convening Logistics: Assist in organizing virtual and in-person convenings, workshops, and collaborative planning sessions among philanthropic stakeholders and climate adaptation experts.

  • Communications and Knowledge Products: Draft memos, presentations, reports, and other materials that support both internal communications and public dissemination of key findings or program updates.

  • Program Monitoring and Evaluation: Support the development and management of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to grantmaking efforts. Ensure robust tracking of programmatic outcomes and learning loops.

  • Subject Matter Representation: Represent the foundation in external conversations, workshops, and panels as a developing subject matter expert, with increasing responsibility over time.

  • Collaborative Operations: Contribute to broader program team support including planning, administration, note-taking, and team coordination.
