Background & Job Description

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) – the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and the world’s largest humanitarian organization – is hiring a Roving Electrical Engineer (SC9) for its operations in Mogadishu, Somalia. This full-time position is a unique opportunity for Somali nationals with strong electrical and electro-mechanical engineering experience to contribute to life-saving operations in the region.

As part of WFP’s engineering unit, the Electrical Engineer will conduct electrical surveys, design and supervise energy solutions (including solar installations), and lead project implementation in diverse and challenging environments. The role demands high technical proficiency, project oversight, and the ability to work in field settings across Somalia.

Tasks

The Electrical Engineer (Roving) will perform a wide array of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Conduct electrical pre-surveys and energy audits across WFP sites.

  • Design and supervise the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of solar power systems, inverters, battery solutions, and electrical distribution systems.

  • Perform electro-mechanical designs using engineering CAD software, review technical drawings, and ensure energy efficiency.

  • Oversee installation of electrical systems in water treatment plants, thermal-controlled warehouses (TCU), hydroponics, and cold rooms.

  • Support HVAC and fire safety system designs and ensure proper installation and maintenance.

  • Act as WFP’s Employer Representative (ER) or Resident Engineer (RE) during the construction phase to ensure quality control, safety, budget adherence, and compliance with WFP Construction Manual standards.

  • Conduct site inspections and prepare detailed project documentation, including budgets, schedules, scope of work, and compliance reports.

  • Participate in planning, procurement, tender evaluations, and cost-control for engineering projects.

  • Assist in project claims resolution, financial reviews, payment certifications, and contractor performance evaluation.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Advanced University Degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; or

  • First University Degree with additional relevant work experience.

  • Professional registration with a recognized national engineering regulatory body is required.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years (with Advanced degree) or 5 years (with First degree) of relevant experience in:

    • Electro-mechanical engineering for infrastructure projects.

    • Renewable energy systems, especially solar system design and installation.

    • Construction contract management, including FIDIC contract packages.

  • Experience in humanitarian or development sectors is a strong asset.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in AutoCAD and other engineering CAD packages.

  • Skilled in project scheduling software: Primavera and MS Project.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office tools.

  • Familiarity with engineering survey equipment and tools.

  • Understanding of energy efficiency practices and green technologies.

Language

  • Fluency in English and Somali (Level C proficiency required).
