As part of this mission, the Legal Division plays a critical role in ensuring compliance, managing legal risks, and upholding governance as the foundation expands internationally. The Assistant General Counsel, Global Tax (AGC) will report to the Deputy Director (Tax & Financial Compliance) and work closely with legal, finance, and operations teams to develop and implement tax policies and regulatory frameworks that align with the foundation’s global operations.

This is an individual contributor role (non-managerial) that requires deep expertise in domestic and international tax law. The ideal candidate will help shape the foundation’s tax strategy, conduct research, provide legal recommendations, and mitigate tax risks across multiple jurisdictions.


Tasks

As an Assistant General Counsel, Global Tax, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing expert legal guidance on global tax laws, international tax structures, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Advising on tax implications of establishing new offices and expanding operations in various global locations.
  • Ensuring compliance with international tax obligations, including VAT, payroll taxes, and permanent establishment considerations.
  • Conducting in-depth legal research on tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Developing cross-foundation policies to ensure consistent tax compliance worldwide.
  • Identifying, mitigating, and resolving tax risks, working with internal stakeholders and external tax advisors.
  • Representing the foundation in negotiations with global tax authorities and handling tax audits.
  • Assisting with OFAC, sanctions, and export control compliance programs.
  • Providing training and education to internal teams on tax laws and best practices.
  • Collaborating with global finance and legal teams to integrate tax compliance into the foundation’s governance framework.
  • Traveling occasionally for global tax compliance initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active US bar membership in good standing.

Experience

  • 7-10 years of tax law experience, preferably with a focus on global tax compliance and nonprofit tax law.
  • Prior experience working with exempt organizations is advantageous but not required.
  • Expertise in US and international tax law, including VAT, payroll tax, and permanent establishment rules.
  • Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex tax laws and provide strategic legal advice.
  • Strong problem-solving and risk mitigation skills.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, particularly in legal and financial operations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with a high level of cultural sensitivity.
  • Proven ability to work in high-pressure environments while prioritizing multiple projects.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
  • High ethical standards, sound judgment, and intellectual curiosity.
