The UNICEF Office of Internal Audit and Investigations (OIAI) is seeking an Intern for its Investigations Section, specializing in Digital Forensics. This is a 6-month, paid internship opportunity, preferably in-person in New York (NYHQ), but remote (full-time or part-time) options will be considered for candidates located globally (including the US, UK, Switzerland, etc.). The intern will support investigations into serious misconduct, fraud, and abuse by assisting with e-Discovery application management, automating evidence processing, and developing business intelligence reports using the Microsoft Ecosystem (PowerShell, PowerBI). This is an excellent chance for IT and data analytics students/recent graduates to gain specialized UN experience. The deadline to apply is November 17, 2025. Background & Job Description

The UNICEF Office of Internal Audit and Investigations (OIAI) is an independent body that reports directly to the Executive Director, responsible for providing objective assurance and conducting investigations into allegations of misconduct (including sexual exploitation and abuse, fraud, corruption, and harassment). The Investigations Section conducts these inquiries following international standards. This internship, based in the Strategy, Intake and Analysis (SIA) Unit, is critical for enhancing the efficiency of digital evidence review and case processing across global investigations teams located in New York, Budapest, and Nairobi.

Tasks

The intern will work under the supervision of an Investigation Manager, focusing heavily on technology and data solutions:

  • e-Discovery Support: Assisting with the ingestion, processing, reporting, and review of electronic evidence into the OIAI’s e-Discovery application.
  • Automation and Development: Researching and developing solutions using the Microsoft Ecosystem (PowerShell, PowerBI) to automate the processing of e-Discovery evidence and internal case workflows.
  • Business Intelligence: Assisting with the production and automatization of business intelligence reports for OIAI management.
  • Open Source Research: Assisting with conducting open source searches and carrying out other tasks assigned by OIAI management.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Essential: Must have graduated within the past two years or be currently enrolled in an Advanced Degree Program in an IT or data analytics related field.
  • Essential: Excellent knowledge of MS Office and relevant computer systems and applications (e.g., PowerShell, PowerBI).

Experience

  • Essential: 0-2 years’ experience with an e-Discovery application is required.
  • Essential: Fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Desirable: Knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, or Pashto).
  • Strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively on multiple assignments simultaneously.

Additional Information

This is a 6-month, paid internship. While the in-person option in New York (NYHQ) is preferred, the position offers flexibility for remote work (Part-Time or Full-Time), accommodating candidates globally. The tentative start date is “as soon as possible.” Applicants must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to starting. This internship offers specialized experience at the intersection of international investigation, forensic technology, and humanitarian work, supporting UNICEF’s mandate to safeguard children.
