Role Overview: Director of Philanthropy

As the Director of Philanthropy at CARE, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family foundations, and philanthropic advisors. This role involves securing six- and seven-figure donations, expanding CARE’s donor network, and engaging major donors in the organization’s mission through personalized stewardship and strategic outreach.

You will collaborate with senior leadership to promote CARE’s impact and ensure that philanthropic supporters are informed about the progress and outcomes of their contributions. You will also work closely with the Principal Gifts team to manage donor relationships and lead efforts to identify and cultivate new prospects.

Key Responsibilities

1. Fundraising and Donor Engagement

  • Portfolio Management: Oversee a portfolio of 30-50 major donors, prospects, and philanthropic advisors, developing and executing customized engagement strategies to secure significant gifts ($100,000+).

  • Major Gift Solicitation: Secure high-value gifts by crafting tailored proposals and stewardship plans. Build and nurture strong, personal relationships with donors to maintain their long-term commitment to CARE’s mission.

  • Creative Communication: Share the meaningful impact of CARE’s programs with donors, ensuring they feel connected to the organization’s work through personalized communications.

  • Stewardship and Reporting: Provide detailed updates to donors about the outcomes of their gifts, demonstrating how their contributions have made a difference in the lives of those in need.

2. Prospect and Pipeline Development

  • Donor Identification and Cultivation: Leverage CARE events, small gatherings, and annual Impact Awards to identify new major donors. Build a robust pipeline of prospects through research, events, and strategic networking.

  • Prospect Research Collaboration: Partner with the Prospect Research team to develop targeted strategies for engaging emerging philanthropists, ensuring sustainable long-term support for CARE’s programs.

  • CRM and Database Management: Maintain up-to-date records in CARE’s CRM system (Salesforce), ensuring accuracy and consistency in donor interactions and engagement efforts.

3. Engagement with DAFs and Wealth Advisors

  • DAF Engagement Strategy: Implement a comprehensive strategy to build and sustain relationships with Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), Community Foundations (CFs), and wealth advisors. Work to increase their awareness of CARE as a top-tier global humanitarian organization.

  • Partnerships with Advisors: Cultivate relationships with key leaders at philanthropic institutions, including DAFs, wealth management firms, and community foundations. Facilitate high-level introductions for internal stakeholders.

  • Increasing Giving from DAFs: Work collaboratively with Senior Directors and CARE’s leadership to develop internal processes that increase giving from DAFs, philanthropic advisors, and private wealth clients.

4. Building Relationships and Community Engagement

  • Relationship Building: Foster deep, meaningful connections between major donors, CARE’s Board Members, program leaders, and external partners. Serve as a liaison to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Philanthropic Networks: Cultivate long-term partnerships with philanthropic networks and advisors, positioning CARE as a go-to partner for impactful giving and socially responsible investing.

5. Strategy Development and Implementation

  • Fundraising Strategy: Collaborate with the Senior Director of Philanthropy to develop innovative fundraising strategies and campaigns aimed at achieving and exceeding annual revenue goals.

  • Innovation in Fundraising: Lead creative approaches to major gift solicitation and donor engagement, integrating new technologies and tools to enhance CARE’s philanthropic outreach efforts.

  • Metrics and Reporting: Regularly report on fundraising progress, providing detailed insights into donor engagement, pipeline development, and major gift acquisition.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fundraising Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising, particularly in a major gifts or principal gifts capacity, working with ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family foundations, and DAFs.

  • Proven Success in Fundraising: Demonstrated ability to secure six- and seven-figure gifts, with a track record of building strong donor relationships and achieving fundraising goals.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft persuasive proposals and donor reports that resonate with high-net-worth individuals.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to engage effectively with donors, Board Members, senior leaders, and staff, establishing trust and credibility.

  • Detail-Oriented: Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Large NGOs: Previous experience working with large, international NGOs or nonprofit organizations is highly desirable.

  • CRM Proficiency: Familiarity with Salesforce or similar donor relationship management systems.
