🌍 Background & Job Overview: WHO’s Climate & Health Strategy

As part of its forward-thinking 2023–2027 strategic direction, WHO—through Unitaid—is spearheading efforts to accelerate access to climate-smart health products globally. These products are designed not only to improve health outcomes but also to reduce environmental footprints across production, distribution, and disposal.

This Research Consultant role directly supports the launch and operationalization of Unitaid’s Climate & Health (C&H) investments. The consultant will serve as a key technical and strategic advisor, providing guidance to ensure projects align with Unitaid’s global mission to enhance sustainability and health equity.

Whether you’re a sustainability expert, policy analyst, or climate strategist, this role offers a chance to influence global policy at the intersection of health systems, climate mitigation, and sustainable innovation.

🧾 Key Deliverables and Consultant Responsibilities

As a Research Consultant, your role will encompass a broad range of deliverables that shape the C&H portfolio and advance WHO’s mission on global sustainability:

1. Investment Development and Launch

  • Collaborate with the Sustainability Manager for Climate & Health to scope, design, and initiate new investments.

  • Offer both strategic insights and technical expertise to align investment development with Unitaid’s climate and health priorities.

  • Support project rollout with clear deliverables that meet 2025 strategic benchmarks.

2. In-Depth Research & Analysis

  • Conduct rigorous technical assessments of current technologies, environmental trends, and health innovation landscapes.

  • Generate actionable insights through market analysis, lifecycle assessments, and evaluations of potential investment areas.

  • Identify emerging gaps and opportunities in climate-smart health technologies, especially those targeting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

3. Proposal Development & Resource Mobilization

  • Assist in the drafting, refining, and validation of investment proposals.

  • Ensure proposals meet the highest standards of relevance, scientific rigor, impact assessment, and financial justification.

  • Support WHO’s efforts to mobilize resources by developing investment narratives that resonate with funders, donors, and global institutions.

🎓 Required Qualifications and Professional Experience

📘 Education Requirements

  • Essential: Advanced university degree (Master’s level) in sustainability, natural/environmental sciences, engineering, business administration, or a closely related field.

  • Desirable: Additional certifications or studies in environmental sustainability, sustainable product manufacturing, or climate-resilient supply chains.

💼 Experience Requirements

  • Over 10 years of professional experience across public, private, and development sectors, with demonstrable expertise in climate and sustainability.

  • Experience managing large-scale climate mitigation or decarbonization initiatives.

  • A proven record in developing investment cases, policy frameworks, and sustainability strategies.

  • Experience working at the intersection of climate change and global health, particularly in relation to access to medical products and services.

  • Familiarity with UN frameworks or similar multilateral environments is considered a strong asset.

🧠 Essential Skills and Knowledge Areas

Successful candidates will bring a strong mix of technical acumen, policy expertise, and collaborative leadership. Key competencies include:

  • Expertise in global environmental frameworks and sustainability standards (e.g., ESG, GHG protocols, LCA tools).

  • Knowledge of health supply chains, especially in LMIC contexts.

  • Analytical capacity to evaluate climate-smart products, sustainability trends, and regulatory landscapes.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence across diverse sectors and cultures.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly in written reports and high-level presentations.

🌐 Language Requirements

  • Required: Expert fluency in English, with the ability to write, synthesize, and present technical research to senior audiences.

  • Desirable: Intermediate-level proficiency in French or another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) is a plus.
