Work Location:

Ideally, the internship will be conducted in person at the UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office, situated in Panama City, Panama. However, there is flexibility regarding the work modality, allowing for options such as fully in-person, remote, or a combination thereof.

Expected Duration:

The internship is anticipated to last for six months.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the designated entity within the United Nations System for addressing environmental issues globally and regionally.
  • UNEP’s mandate involves coordinating the development of environmental policy consensus and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
  • The Latin America and the Caribbean Office, situated in Panama City, collaborates closely with the 33 countries of the region, including 16 small island developing States, with a combined population of approximately 650 million people.
  • The office aligns its activities with the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of the UN Environment (UNEA).
  • The Chemicals and Pollution Action Programme, Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), aims to promote the transition of countries to the sound management of chemicals and waste and encourages actions to prevent and control air pollution, thereby minimizing environmental and human health impacts.
  • UNEP facilitates the implementation of various international agreements, including the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, Minamata Convention on Mercury, and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
  • The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office provides secretariat support to initiatives such as the Intergovernmental Network on Chemicals and Waste, the Intergovernmental Network on Atmospheric Pollution, the Coalition for the Progressive Closure of Dumpsites, and the Working Group on Plastics and Microplastics Pollution, among others.
  • Under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator on Chemicals and Pollution Action Programme, interns will support various projects and initiatives aimed at improving the sound management of chemicals and waste and promoting actions for clean air in the region.
  • Interns will assist with communication and knowledge management tasks for projects including the Intergovernmental Network on Chemicals and Waste, the Intergovernmental Network on Atmospheric Pollution, the Coalition for the Progressive Closure of Dumpsites, the Working Group on Plastics and Microplastics Pollution, and the Zero Waste in the Caribbean project.
  • Specific tasks include supporting communication tasks, coordinating external communication, drafting and disseminating progress reports, managing knowledge resulting from cooperation networks, coordinating meetings, developing public awareness materials, coordinating events, and supporting other activities of the Chemicals and Pollution Programme as required.

Qualifications/special skills:

  • Academic:
    • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application:
      • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
      • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level).
      • Have graduated with a university degree.
    • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Preferably, final year undergraduate or master’s degree student in the field of communication and public awareness, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related field of studies.
  • Languages:
    • Fluency in oral and written English and Spanish is required for this internship.
    • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Educational expertise focused on the United Nations is an asset.
    • Knowledge of critical environmental issues in the Latin American and Caribbean region is an asset.
    • Proficient writing skills in Spanish and English.
    • Competence in organizing and disseminating face-to-face and online events is an asset.
    • Skills in design and data visualization programs are assets.
    • Experience in social media for public awareness is an asset.
    • Ability to develop public awareness materials is an asset.

Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations. Any costs associated with travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. It’s important for successful candidates to discuss specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
