Position Overview:

The Events Intern will play a pivotal role in supporting the United Nations Foundation’s Events team throughout the entire event planning and execution process. This integral position will contribute to operational efficiency and seamless execution of tasks. Working closely with the team, the Events Intern will assist in coordinating international visits and staffing key events at the DC office. The ideal candidate thrives in an organized and detail-oriented environment, possesses strong technical skills, and excels in structured project management. Additionally, they demonstrate exceptional interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to collaborate within a team while also managing tasks independently.

This paid opportunity is available from May 28, 2024, through September 2, 2024. The compensation rate is $17.50 per hour for individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 8 months of graduation) from an associate degree or bachelor’s degree program, and $20 per hour for individuals currently enrolled in a graduate program.

This position is remote, requiring access to a computer with a stable internet connection.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the events team in planning, organizing, and executing virtual roundtables and webinars.
  • Assist in the coordination of UNF’s annual signature events and summer board meeting.
  • Support event registration and on-site logistics for in-person events held at the DC office.
  • Aid the Senior Manager of International Engagement and Advance in planning and executing international trips, including tasks such as passport collection, visa processing, and preparation of briefing materials.
  • Manage the events team intake form and schedule kick-off calls.
  • Create and manage event registration pages and handle guest communications through the online system Splash.
  • Oversee internal room bookings and provide reservation support at the DC office.
  • Assist in event-related communications, including creating and managing documents such as BEOs, timelines, calendars, reports, and diagrams.
  • Support the Global Events Coordinator in the creation and management of contracts related to events.

Selection Criteria:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be recent graduates (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university.
  • Previous experience or background in communications, public relations, events, or non-profit work is advantageous.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, strong communication abilities, and the capacity to multitask effectively are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain composed under pressure and make decisions with maturity and sound judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project coordination, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc.) is required.
  • Knowledge of or interest in international development is beneficial.
  • Must be able to meet regular attendance and tardiness policies.
  • Access to a personal laptop computer and reliable internet connectivity is mandatory.
  • Availability to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

The United Nations comprises six primary operational bodies: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, the UN Secretariat, and the Trusteeship Council, the latter of which has remained inactive since 1994. Within the UN System, numerous specialized agencies, funds, and programs exist, such as the World Bank Group, the World Health Organization, the World Food Programme, UNESCO, and UNICEF. Moreover, non-governmental organizations may receive consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and other agencies.

The secretary-general, currently António Guterres, a Portuguese politician and diplomat, serves as the UN’s principal administrative officer. Guterres commenced his first five-year term on January 1, 2017, and was re-elected on June 8, 2021. The organization’s funding primarily comes from assessed and voluntary contributions made by its member states.
