Background:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) holds a crucial and distinctive role in assisting high-risk nations in reaching their developmental objectives by minimizing loss of life and assets while bolstering long-term resilience. Operating in collaboration with governments at international, national, and local levels, UNDP ensures that disaster risk reduction (DRR) becomes a nationally-led and owned agenda, seamlessly integrated into national development strategies. UNDP’s initiatives center on fostering resilience and ensuring that development endeavors remain both risk-informed and sustainable. This involves aiding governments in the systematic and comprehensive delivery of risk-informed development through effective communication, mitigation, and management of risks.
From 2005 to 2016, UNDP’s country-level DRR and recovery initiatives have amounted to expenditures totaling USD 2.1 billion (further details on UNDP’s DRR portfolio can be accessed here). Presently, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery for Building Resilience Team (DRT) oversees a portfolio of global and regional projects valued at approximately USD 60 million. Throughout the reporting period, UNDP has enhanced integration with climate change adaptation efforts and maintained a strong focus on partnerships and mechanisms aimed at fulfilling Sendai commitments. Key achievements during this period include:
Assistance to 148 countries in crafting national and local DRR strategies and action plans; Support for 84 countries in comprehending and communicating risks through risk assessments; Collaboration with 90 countries to fortify their legal and regulatory frameworks for Disaster Risk Management (DRM); Aid provided to 110 countries in building post-disaster recovery capacities.
The DRT spearheads UNDP’s global practices in this domain, offering policy counsel and programmatic support to UNDP Regional Hubs and Country Offices in the formulation, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of disaster risk reduction and recovery programs. The team closely collaborates with other UNDP Global Policy Network (GPN) practices including climate change, governance, conflict prevention, sustainable development, and poverty eradication, striving for a comprehensive, multidimensional approach to resilience building.
This position is specifically designed to bolster UNDP’s efforts in preparedness and anticipation, serving as one of the key strategic initiatives within the DRT. The intern will contribute to the team by undertaking research, managing knowledge, and handling communications tasks related to the development of a training package on preparedness.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Development of the UNDP Preparedness Toolkit: Conduct research and categorize resources to support the creation of new thematic modules for the Preparedness Toolkit. Development of the UNDP Preparedness Learning Pathway: Undertake research and categorize resources to support the formulation of a training and learning package covering topics relevant to preparedness and anticipation. Assist in the development of slide decks. Aid in designing visuals using Canva.
Support the creation of package handouts and additional reading lists. Contribute to the development of pre-workshop and post-workshop evaluation forms, including utilizing online platforms such as Google Forms or Survey Monkey. Assist in establishing and maintaining the package repository on UNDP Intranet/Spark Blue and MS Teams. Support in organizing webinars for the rollout of the UNDP Preparedness Learning Pathway: Assist in organizing webinars utilizing the learning package.
Contribute to crafting tailored webinar plans for all sessions, including facilitation guidance for resource persons. Aid in facilitating webinars, including the development of MURAL boards, facilitating group discussions, and setting up Zoom options. Compile webinar reports. Support the team in promoting webinars, developing learning briefs, updating Spark Blue pages hosting webinar materials, etc. Provide assistance to the team on any other portfolio-related tasks involving research, analysis, and communication. Develop briefs, talking points, slide decks, etc., as required. Competencies:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Proficiency in utilizing online applications such as Canva, MURAL, Zoom, MS Teams, Google Forms, etc. Proactive approach to tasks. Strong organizational abilities. Keen attention to detail and proven experience in proofreading. Ability to collaborate effectively within a team. Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and appreciation for diverse cultures and practices. Proficiency in computer skills and experience using web-based applications, social media, and data management systems. Required Skills and Experience:
Enrolled in a Master’s program or equivalent in fields such as disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, disaster management, environmental management, humanitarian affairs, or international development. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken. The intern will be integrated into UNDP’s Disaster Risk Reduction for Building Resilience Team based in Geneva. Given the current context, the intern is expected to work remotely.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Global Disaster Preparedness Lead and overall strategic guidance of the Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction for Building Resilience Team.
As of January 1, 2020, interns may receive a stipend in accordance with UNDP Internship Policies, based on the rate applicable to their country of residence, if not financially supported by any institution or program such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship program. The stipend is intended to cover the cost of living at the duty station.
Interns are responsible for arranging adequate medical insurance for the duration of the internship. UNDP assumes no liability for costs arising from accidents, illnesses, or deaths occurring during the internship.
For travel to the duty station, the intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and making travel arrangements to and from the duty station where the internship will take place.
Interns are ineligible to apply for or be appointed to any post within UNDP during the internship period.
Interns are not considered staff members and are prohibited from representing UNDP in any official capacity.
The Internship Programme is designed to complement an intern’s studies and is not intended to lead to further employment with UNDP. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
Interns will undergo evaluation at the conclusion of their contract, and recognition of their work will be provided in writing.
