The ACLS Fellowships 2026-27 competition is now accepting applications from scholars conducting research in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. The programme will award up to 60 fellowships, with approximately half expected to support early-career scholars.
Fellowship Overview
The fellowships support research proposals across all disciplines of the humanities and interpretive social sciences. Applicants can propose research covering any time period, world region, or humanistic methodology.
The ultimate goal should be a significant scholarly work, which may include:
- A monograph
- Scholarly articles
- A publicly engaged humanities project
- A digital research project
- A critical edition
- Other scholarly resources
Projects can be at the beginning, middle, or final stages of development.
Award Amount
Selected fellows can receive up to $60,000 for a 12-month fellowship.
Shorter fellowships are prorated at $5,000 per month, with a minimum award of $30,000.
Additional supplements of $3,000 to $6,000 are available for independent scholars, adjunct faculty, and faculty with teaching-intensive roles to cover eligible fellowship-period costs such as research support, manuscript development workshops, conference attendance, health insurance, or childcare and eldercare.
Who Can Apply?
ACLS welcomes scholars working across the humanities and interpretive social sciences and encourages applications from researchers at different stages of their scholarly careers.
The programme particularly seeks broad representation across fields, institutions and scholarly backgrounds. Approximately half of the awards in this competition are expected to go to early-career scholars.
Fellowship Duration and Location
ACLS Fellowships are designed to allow scholars to dedicate six to twelve months to full-time research and writing.
The fellowship is portable, meaning it can be held at an appropriate research location of the fellow’s choice.
What Is Not Funded?
The programme does not support:
- Fiction such as novels or films
- Textbooks
- Straightforward translations without substantial scholarly interpretation and apparatus
- Projects primarily focused on pedagogy.
Applicants should therefore ensure that their proposed project has a clear scholarly research and writing component.
