The WSA Young Innovators Award 2026 | World Summit Awards has an important update for young entrepreneurs and digital innovators worldwide: the World Summit Awards has paused the Young Innovators Call for 2026, with the programme officially scheduled to return in 2027.

WSA says the pause forms part of its transition into WSA 3.0, a new phase of the organisation’s development toward 2030.

The organisation emphasizes that the pause is temporary and that its commitment to youth entrepreneurship remains strong.

Young innovators developing digital solutions with measurable social impact should therefore use 2026 to strengthen their ventures, improve measurable impact and prepare for the Young Innovators Call when it returns in 2027.

WSA also states that innovators who already have a market-ready digital solution with measurable social impact do not necessarily need to wait. They may consider applying through the organisation’s regular WSA Award call, subject to the applicable eligibility and submission rules.

The most important point for applicants is that there is no active 2026 WSA Young Innovators application round.

Why There Is No WSA Young Innovators Call in 2026

WSA states that it is taking a short break from the Young Innovators Call as it transitions into WSA 3.0.

The organisation describes the change as:

A pause—not a farewell.

WSA says the Young Innovators Call will return in 2027 with new opportunities to recognize and support the next generation of digital innovators creating positive social impact.

This means prospective applicants should not interpret the absence of a 2026 call as the programme being permanently discontinued.

Instead, young innovators can use the pause to strengthen their projects before the next application cycle.

What Is the WSA Young Innovators Award?

The WSA Young Innovators programme recognizes digital innovations created by young entrepreneurs and teams that address social or environmental challenges.

The programme focuses strongly on solutions that contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Rather than supporting concepts alone, the Young Innovators programme is intended for digital products and solutions that are already launched and demonstrating measurable impact.

Typical digital solutions can include:

• Mobile applications
• Websites
• Wearable applications
• Digital platforms
• Interactive products
• SMS-based services
• Games
• Kiosk-based technology
• Other digital solutions

The programme is designed around practical digital innovation rather than ideas that have not yet been tested in the market.

Who Can Apply for WSA Young Innovators?

Under the eligibility criteria published by WSA, applications can come from several types of innovators.

Eligible participants may include:

• Start-ups
• Social entrepreneurs
• Companies
• NGOs
• Student groups
• Project teams
• Individuals

This makes the award broader than a conventional startup competition.

A nonprofit project, university team or individual innovator can potentially qualify if all relevant eligibility requirements are satisfied.

Age Requirement

The WSA Young Innovators programme is designed specifically for young teams.

Under the published criteria:

At least one founding member and the majority of the team must be under the age of 26.

The WSA page currently expresses this using a birth-date threshold associated with its listed criteria.

Applicants considering the 2027 call should carefully review the updated 2027 age cutoff once the next application round is officially announced, because age-date thresholds may be adjusted for the new cycle.

Digital Component Is Mandatory

The submitted innovation must contain a:

Digital component.

WSA does not limit entrants to one particular type of technology.

Possible channels include:

• Mobile
• Web
• Wearables
• SMS
• Games
• Interactive media
• Digital installations
• Other technology-enabled platforms

This flexibility allows innovators working with different technologies to participate.

Social or Environmental Impact Is Required

Digital technology alone is not enough.

The innovation should create positive change in society or the environment.

It should also contribute to at least one of the:

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Applicants should therefore be able to explain not only how their technology works but also what measurable problem it helps address.

Projects Must Be Market Ready

One of the most important eligibility conditions is that submitted solutions must already be:

Launched and on the market.

WSA says submissions should have proven social impact.

The Young Innovators programme does not accept:

• Ideas
• Early drafts
• Prototypes
• Incomplete solutions

This is an important distinction.

Someone who only has an idea for an app is not yet at the stage the programme is designed to recognize.

What Should Innovators Do During the 2026 Pause?

WSA specifically encourages young entrepreneurs to keep developing their ventures.

For teams that are not yet market ready, 2026 can be used to:

• Refine the product
• Test the solution
• Launch publicly
• Build a user base
• Measure impact
• Strengthen the business or operating model
• Improve technical reliability
• Collect evidence of outcomes
• Build partnerships
• Connect with relevant communities

This preparation can make an innovation more competitive when the Young Innovators Call returns.

Regular WSA Award as an Alternative

Young innovators who already have a digital solution with measurable social impact may not have to wait until 2027.

WSA encourages such applicants to look at the regular WSA Award call.

Applicants should review the rules of that programme separately because the regular WSA Award may have different:

• Eligibility criteria
• Nomination procedures
• Age requirements
• Categories
• Deadlines
• Selection processes

It should not automatically be treated as identical to the Young Innovators competition.

Benefits of the WSA Young Innovators Award

When the programme is active, winners can benefit from significant international exposure and networking opportunities.

WSA Global Congress

Young Innovators winners receive an opportunity to engage through the WSA Global Congress.

Winners can present their digital solutions to an audience that can include:

• Experts
• Impact entrepreneurs
• Mentors
• Investors
• Innovation leaders

The Congress also includes workshops focused on professional development and networking.

Global Visibility

Winning innovations can be featured through WSA’s communication channels.

These can include:

• WSA website
• WSA catalogue
• Social media
• Newsletters
• Press releases

Winning solutions may also receive a WSA Winners Seal.

This recognition can help innovators demonstrate international validation when communicating with partners, funders or investors.

International Networking

Participants can connect with other social innovators from around the world.

This can create opportunities to:

• Exchange ideas
• Learn from other markets
• Build partnerships
• Share solutions
• Explore collaboration
• Learn from different social-impact models

The WSA ecosystem is built around international digital innovation and social impact.

Access to the WSA Community

Winning teams can become part of WSA’s wider network of:

• Changemakers
• Innovators
• Industry leaders
• Experts
• Social entrepreneurs

The network gives participants opportunities to continue learning and collaborating beyond the competition itself.

Competition Experience

The application process itself can help teams improve how they communicate their work.

Applicants must explain:

• The purpose of their innovation
• How it works
• Social or environmental impact
• Market readiness
• Why the solution is different

This process can help teams strengthen their pitch and refine the way they present their impact.

How the Jury Process Works

WSA describes the Young Innovators selection process as a:

Two-tier jury process.

Applications first go through an Online Jury.

The Online Jury assesses submitted solutions and selects a shortlist.

After that, the Young Innovators Grand Jury reviews and debates the shortlisted entries before selecting winners.

This process is designed to create a fair and diverse evaluation of digital innovations.

What Makes a Strong WSA Young Innovators Entry?

Although the 2026 call is paused, innovators preparing for 2027 can use the existing criteria as a useful guide.

Build a Real Product

The programme is not designed for ideas or proposals.

The digital solution should be launched and functioning.

Demonstrate Impact

Applicants should collect evidence showing that their solution creates positive outcomes.

Useful indicators could include:

• Number of users
• Communities reached
• Beneficiaries
• Environmental impact
• Educational outcomes
• Health outcomes
• Economic benefits
• Improved accessibility

The most relevant indicators will depend on the project.

Connect the Solution to the SDGs

Applicants should be able to explain which Sustainable Development Goal or goals their innovation addresses.

Show Why the Digital Element Matters

The technology should play a meaningful role in solving the problem.

Adding a website to an otherwise non-digital project would not necessarily demonstrate strong digital innovation.

Explain Market Readiness

Teams should show that the product is already being used rather than merely proposed.

Examples of Suitable Innovation Areas

The WSA Young Innovators criteria are broad enough to accommodate digital solutions across many sectors.

Potential areas can include:

• Education
• Healthcare
• Agriculture
• Climate action
• Accessibility
• Financial inclusion
• Employment
• Civic participation
• Gender equality
• Community development
• Environmental protection
• Sustainable cities
• Youth empowerment

What matters most is the combination of digital innovation and measurable positive impact.

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG alignment is an important part of the award.

Projects might contribute to goals such as:

• No Poverty
• Zero Hunger
• Good Health and Well-being
• Quality Education
• Gender Equality
• Clean Water and Sanitation
• Affordable and Clean Energy
• Decent Work and Economic Growth
• Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
• Reduced Inequalities
• Sustainable Cities and Communities
• Responsible Consumption and Production
• Climate Action
• Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
• Partnerships for the Goals

Applicants should avoid simply listing SDGs without demonstrating how their activities genuinely contribute to them.

Is the WSA Young Innovators Award Open Worldwide?

The programme has historically been positioned as an international digital innovation award.

However, applicants preparing for 2027 should wait for the official 2027 call to confirm the complete geographic rules, nomination conditions and eligibility requirements.

Because the 2027 call has not yet been published in the supplied information, it would be inaccurate to invent a 2027 application deadline or country list now.

Is There a Cash Prize?

The official Young Innovators information supplied here emphasizes benefits such as:

• Global Congress participation
• Visibility
• Networking
• Community access
• Competition experience

It does not state a guaranteed cash award.

Applicants should therefore not interpret the programme as a cash-grant competition unless a future official call specifically announces monetary prizes.

WSA Young Innovators 2027

WSA explicitly says:

The Young Innovators Call will return in 2027.

However, the supplied official information does not yet give:

• 2027 opening date
• 2027 deadline
• Exact 2027 age cutoff
• Number of winners
• 2027 event dates
• Any new financial benefits

Prospective applicants should therefore watch for the official 2027 announcement.

Final Thoughts

The WSA Young Innovators Award 2026 | World Summit Awards should currently be understood as an important programme update rather than an open 2026 application opportunity.

The World Summit Awards has officially confirmed that it is pausing the Young Innovators Call in 2026 while transitioning into WSA 3.0.

The good news for young digital entrepreneurs is that:

The WSA Young Innovators Call will return in 2027.

Under the current published criteria, competitive projects should:

• Have a digital component
