Join the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of governors committed to advancing state-led climate action and securing America’s net-zero future. The Alliance Secretariat, part of the United Nations Foundation, provides crucial support to member states in accelerating climate action through technical assistance, policy development, and capacity building.

We are currently seeking an intern to support our research, policy development, peer-to-peer learning, and coordination efforts. As an intern, you will play a vital role in tracking policy progress, drafting briefing papers, and providing general coordination and program support. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the policies and actions U.S. states are undertaking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors of the economy.

This paid internship runs from June 10, 2024, through September 3, 2024, offering an hourly compensation rate of $17.50 for individuals enrolled in or recently graduated from an associate or bachelor’s degree program (within 8 months of graduation), and $20 per hour for graduate program enrollees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Agenda Development and Outreach: Collaborate with the team to develop agendas and provide outreach support for Natural and Working Lands learning labs, fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange among stakeholders. Contribute to the creation of engaging and informative materials to facilitate effective communication during events.
  • Meeting and Workshop Support: Assist in the preparation of materials for major Alliance meetings and workshops, ensuring seamless coordination and effective communication of key messages. Help coordinate logistics, including scheduling, participant communication, and technical setup for virtual or in-person gatherings.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on trends and challenges in state implementation of the Alliance’s Intended Reflective Ambition (IRA), synthesizing findings into actionable insights for partners and stakeholders. Analyze policy developments and emerging best practices to inform Alliance strategies and initiatives.
  • Federal Funding Tracking: Monitor federal funding opportunities relevant to climate action and compile newsletters to update states on potential funding sources and opportunities. Collaborate with team members to develop engaging and informative content that highlights funding opportunities and resources.
  • Additional Support Tasks: Provide assistance with various tasks as needed, contributing to the overall success and effectiveness of Alliance initiatives and projects. This may include administrative tasks, data entry, and other tasks to support the smooth functioning of the Secretariat.

Selection Criteria:

  • Educational Background: Applicants can be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or recent graduates within the last 8 months, with a demonstrated interest in environmental studies, policy, or related fields.
  • Research and Communication Skills: Strong research skills and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely, both in written and verbal formats.
  • Climate Policy and Coalition Experience: Demonstrated interest and experience in state climate policy, coalition building, or related areas, with a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities in advancing climate action.
  • Federal Climate Policy: Familiarity or interest in federal climate policy and its implications for state-level climate action, contributing to a holistic understanding of the policy landscape.
  • Innovative Communication: Creative and innovative approach to communicating technically complex materials, making information accessible and engaging for diverse audiences.
  • Professional Attributes: Responsible, flexible, collaborative, hardworking, and committed to the mission of the U.S. Climate Alliance, with the ability to work effectively in a remote setting.
  • Language Skills: Fluent in English, with strong proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to Work Under Pressure: Capable of working under pressure and handling stress, maintaining a positive and proactive attitude in a fast-paced enviroment.
