Introduction:
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) serves as the UN headquarters in Africa and represents the office of the Secretary-General. UNON provides administrative, conference, and information services to support the program implementation of various UN agencies, including the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). This internship is situated within the Facility Management and Transport Section (FMTS) of the Division of Administrative Services, UNON. Under the supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Officer, the selected intern will play a crucial role in supporting environmental initiatives and affairs.

As an Environmental Management Intern, you will play a vital role in advancing environmental sustainability efforts within the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) premises. Your responsibilities will encompass a range of tasks aimed at fostering a greener and more eco-conscious environment. Here’s a detailed breakdown of your key duties:

Administrative Support:

  • Assist in the day-to-day administrative processes related to environmental affairs and initiatives within UNON premises.
  • Support activities such as waste disposal management and conducting reviews of infrastructure conditions to identify areas for improvement.

Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Conduct comprehensive surveys across the complex to gather data on various environmental aspects, including electricity and water consumption patterns.
  • Analyze data collected to identify trends, patterns, and areas where improvements can be made to enhance environmental sustainability.
  • Focus on assessing rainwater runoff for potential utilization in water harvesting initiatives, contributing to resource conservation efforts.

Research and Investigation:

  • Assist in conducting preliminary investigations to gather essential data and formulate action plans.
  • Perform commonly used engineering calculations and create specifications to support environmental projects and initiatives.

Awareness Raising:

  • Contribute to the development and production of awareness-raising materials addressing environmental topics and concerns.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating activities such as interviews, workshops, and presentations to educate stakeholders about environmental issues and best practices.

Environmental Footprint Reduction:

  • Brainstorm and propose innovative ideas and strategies to minimize UNON’s environmental footprint across various service delivery areas and building operations.
  • Collaborate with team members to implement sustainable practices and initiatives that promote energy efficiency, waste reduction, and overall environmental stewardship.

By actively engaging in these duties, you will not only gain valuable hands-on experience but also make a tangible contribution to the promotion of environmental sustainability within the UNON premises.

Qualifications and Special Skills:
To be eligible for this internship, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, environmental technology, or related fields.
  • Enrollment in the final year of a university degree program (bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D.), or completion of such a program.
  • Experience in conducting research, with a focus on environmental studies.
  • Fluency in oral and written English; knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
