Duties and Responsibilities: As an intern, you will be engaged in various tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Conducting comprehensive research to identify and analyze international human rights trends, developments, and initiatives within intergovernmental bodies at the United Nations, with a primary focus on the General Assembly Third Committee. This involves assessing their impact and preparing detailed documents and summaries.
  • Providing valuable assistance in organizing pertinent meetings, including logistical support and coordination with relevant stakeholders. Tasks may include scheduling, venue arrangements, participant coordination, and documentation.
  • Supporting the collection of best practices, statistics, and other data concerning intergovernmental meetings and forums related to human rights, with a keen focus on data analysis and interpretation. This includes utilizing statistical software and other analytical tools to derive insights from complex datasets.
  • Assisting human rights officers in priority countries, regions, and thematic areas, including actively participating in meetings, workshops, and field visits to gain practical insights into human rights issues on the ground. This involvement may extend to liaising with local stakeholders, conducting interviews, and contributing to field reports.
  • Participating in the drafting and editing of various documents such as reports, position papers, statements, and presentations, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to established guidelines. This entails conducting thorough literature reviews, synthesizing information from diverse sources, and incorporating feedback from stakeholders.
  • Attending relevant virtual meetings, seminars, and conferences as necessary, actively contributing to discussions and knowledge sharing initiatives. This may involve presenting research findings, participating in panel discussions, and networking with experts and practitioners in the field.

Qualifications/Special Skills:

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and concisely across different formats (e.g., reports, memos, briefs). Familiarity with academic writing standards and citation styles is preferred.
  • Proficiency in research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and information management systems. Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, including survey design, data collection, and statistical analysis, is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive attitude with a demonstrated commitment to promoting and protecting human rights globally. Strong interest in international affairs, social justice, and humanitarian issues, with a clear understanding of the principles and mechanisms of human rights law and advocacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in multicultural teams and engage with diverse stakeholders. Experience working in cross-cultural settings and sensitivity to cultural differences and nuances.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to navigate evolving work environments and address emerging challenges effectively. Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities, coupled with a growth mindset and a continuous improvement orientation.

Languages:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Proficiency in French is highly desirable, with the ability to draft and edit documents in both languages. Knowledge of any additional official UN language such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish is advantageous and may be required for specific assignments.
  • Strong communication skills in multiple languages, including the ability to interpret and translate verbal and written content accurately. Experience working as a language interpreter or translator in a professional setting is preferred.
