Brown University Visiting Scholar Program 2027

The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies (CHRHS) at Brown University’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs is accepting applications for its 2027 Visiting Scholar Program.

The programme is open to academics on sabbatical and human rights practitioners who would benefit from a short-term affiliation while pursuing their own research and writing projects.

Research Areas

For Spring and Fall 2027, CHRHS is particularly interested in researchers and practitioners working on:

  • Asylum and immigration rights
  • Environmental justice and rights
  • Human rights
  • Humanitarian studies

Applicants working in other human rights and humanitarian studies areas are also welcome to apply.

Visiting Scholar Experience

Visiting Scholars are expected to focus primarily on their own research. They may also participate in the intellectual life of the CHRHS community, including giving a public presentation or workshop related to their work.

Appointments can last from one month to one semester and are available only during the academic year, from September 1 to May 30.

Funding and Benefits

The visiting scholar affiliation is a courtesy appointment and does not include a salary, benefits or other compensation.

Visiting Scholars generally need funding from their employer, home institution or an external grant to cover their expenses. Limited shared office space may be available, but it is not guaranteed.

International scholars may need a J-1 exchange visitor visa to enter the United States.
